Nelnet’s Corporate Communications department is seeking a detail-oriented Corporate Marketing and Communications Strategist to join our fast-paced internal communications team. This position integrates content creation and review, internal marketing strategy, campaign execution, project management, stakeholder collaboration, and oversight of communication channels to support Nelnet’s business units as well as company-wide initiatives.


The ideal candidate has corporate or agency experience and excels at connecting people to purpose, driving engagement through clear, inspiring communications plans and content, and ensuring message consistency across a variety of internal platforms and experiences.


With the support of other members of the team, the role’s primary objective is to enhance and maintain a culture of awareness, connection, and engagement through compelling content and effective digital platforms/channels.


The position is based in downtown Lincoln, NE, at Nelnet’s newly renovated headquarters, and requires in-office work with some remote flexibility. The role reports to the Director of Corporate Communications and includes supervision and mentorship of a part-time communications intern.

JOB RESPONSIBILITIES:

Strategic Communications

  • Support the development and execution of department and organization-wide content strategy.

  • Serve as strategic resource for various internal organization-wide campaigns, initiatives, and one-off projects in collaboration with planning committees and/or key stakeholders.

  • Develop and execute internal communications plans aligned with business goals and initiatives.

  • Assist with change management communications and special projects as needed.

  • Collaborate with team leads and internal stakeholders to evaluate the success of content, channels, and campaigns, providing insights and recommendations for continuous improvement.

Content Creation, Review, and Editing

  • Assist in writing, editing, reviewing, and optimizing content including emails, intranet posts, campaign deliverables, leadership messages, and event materials.

  • Maintain brand consistency, ensure message clarity, and align all communications with strategic goals.

  • Review creative assets for accuracy, grammar, brand consistency, and technical quality prior to final stakeholder review and final production/distribution

Channel and Platform Management

  • Lead strategic initiatives to enhance internal communication platforms and channels by improving processes, elevating standards, and driving optimization across digital content, design, and site management.

  • Responsible for overseeing the Nelnet Communications inbox and providing timely responses to inquiries.

  • Stay up to date about internal communications best practices and optimization strategies related to technology, digital platforms, communication channels as well as general structure and design.

Project Management and Resource Coordination

  • Manage multiple concurrent projects using project management software.

  • Collaborate with creative, traffic, and production teams to track timelines, assign resources, and maintain visibility on priorities, ensuring projects are delivered on time, on budget, and with excellence.

  • Serve as a trusted communications partner to internal business areas, keeping partners and key stakeholders well-informed.

Event Planning and Support

  • Assist in planning and executing small- and large-scale internal events such as annual leadership meetings, innovation sessions, and campaign rollouts.

AI Integration for Efficiency

  • Utilize artificial intelligence (AI) tools (e.g., Microsoft Copilot) to enhance workflows, streamline content creation, summarize meeting notes, and improve communication strategy execution.

Mentorship

  • Provide leadership, mentorship, and guidance to a part-time intern.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Communications, Journalism, Public Relations, Marketing, or a related field.

  • 3–5 years of experience in corporate, agency, or public-sector communications.

  • Exceptional storytelling, writing, editing, and proofreading skills.

  • Strong project management and organizational skills with the ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously and deliver high-quality work on time.

  • Experience managing internal communications channels and digital platforms with a demonstrated ability to develop and execute internal communication strategies that align with organizational goals.

  • Proven experience translating complex business priorities into clear, compelling messaging across multiple internal channels.

  • Proficiency in Microsoft 365 (especially Teams, Outlook, SharePoint, and Copilot tools).

  • Comfortable exploring and adopting AI-powered tools to improve workflows and creative output.

  • Emotionally intelligent with audience awareness and ability to adapt messaging for impact.

  • Self-motivated with the ability to work independently and collaboratively in a fast-paced, deadline-driven environment.
