We’re looking for a motivated and detail-oriented Software Engineer to join our team! In this role, you’ll be responsible for designing, developing, maintaining, and improving software applications. Your day-to-day will include coding, debugging, testing, and troubleshooting as part of the full application development lifecycle.

You’ll work on a range of software development projects, contributing your expertise to design, build, and enhance applications. Collaboration with cross-functional teams, applying sound engineering practices, and driving solutions forward will be key parts of your role. While support is available when needed, you’ll also be expected to work independently and take ownership of your work.

JOB RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Researches, designs, implements, and maintains software applications based on user and business requirements.

  • Writes clean, efficient, and well-documented code; performs unit and integration testing to ensure quality and reliability.

  • Participates in Agile development processes, including sprint planning, daily stand-ups, and retrospectives; adapts quickly to changing priorities and evolving requirements.

  • Collaborates effectively with team members and stakeholders, maintaining a positive, solution-oriented mindset.

  • Participate in an on-call rotation to support production systems and ensure application availability and performance

  • Continuously develops technical skills and stays current with industry trends, tools, and best practices.

-This position offers a hybrid work option. Nelnet values flexibility and understands the importance of work-life integration. Our hybrid work environment allows associates to work remotely for part of the week, while also fostering collaboration and team connection through in-office presence three days per week.

Education:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or a related field, or equivalent experience

Experience:

  • 3+ years of experience in software development using Java

  • 1–2 years of experience integrating or leveraging AI tools within the software development lifecycle (e.g., code generation, testing, optimization, or automation)

  • Hands-on experience with the Spring Framework

  • Experience working with relational databases such as PostgreSQL and MSSQL

Competencies – Skills / Knowledge / Abilities:

  • Proficiency in Java/JEE, including Spring and Hibernate

  • Familiarity with a variety of databases, including SQL Server, PostgreSQL, and MySQL

  • Experience with Service-Oriented Architecture (SOA) and/or Microservices

  • Strong experience designing and implementing RESTful APIs

  • Logical, analytical, and creative approach to problem-solving

  • Ability to work effectively both independently and as part of a team

  • Strong organizational and time management skills; able to manage multiple priorities simultaneously

  • Demonstrated respect, collaboration, and pride in ownership

  • Adaptability to change and evolving requirements

  • Commitment to continuous improvement and delivering value

**Pay Range for this position is - $90,000-$105,000
