Join Nelnet’s newest rotational Pathway track designed for high-performing, analytical thinkers who thrive on solving business challenges. As a Pathway Business Strategy Intern, you will collaborate across multiple business areas to improve efficiency, streamline processes, and drive insights through data. This track is ideal for students who want broad exposure to diverse business functions and enjoy using technology and analytics to make an impact.

JOB RESPONSIBILITIES:

As a Pathway Intern, you work directly as a functioning member of multiple teams within Nelnet. Rotate through a variety of business departments across the enterprise, adding value to projects already in place and/or creating new ones to own. In addition, you will collaborate with other interns to complete multiple projects based on real business problems Nelnet faces today. This program offers scheduled events, programming, networking, and mentorship opportunities!

Business Strategy Track – Driving Efficiency Through Insight
Help optimize operations and uncover opportunities for improvement. In this track, you will tackle projects requiring critical thinking, data literacy, and process innovation. Available departments to rotate through include:

• Nelnet Business Services - FACTS
• Nelnet Diversified Services – Consumer Loans

• Nelnet Financial Services

Types of projects may include:

  • Analyzing operational data to identify trends, gaps, and improvement opportunities.

  • Building and maintaining advanced Excel models for forecasting, tracking, or reporting.

  • Leveraging AI tools and automation to streamline workflows and increase team efficiency.

  • Gathering business requirements and partnering with stakeholders to design solutions.

  • Pulling and interpreting data from internal systems to support decision-making.

  • Documenting processes and recommending workflow improvements.

  • Assisting with ad-hoc, cross-functional initiatives based on organizational needs.

You will receive:

  • Company-provided equipment (laptop, monitor, accessories).

  • Support from managers, Nelnet’s Mentor Program, campus recruiting, and broader support functions.

EDUCATION:
Enrolled in a 4-year degree, preferable sophomore or junior status, in majors such as Business Administration, Finance, Data Analytics, Management Information Systems, or related fields is required.

EXPERIENCE:

  • Strong proficiency in Microsoft Excel, preferred but not required

  • Experience in advanced formulas, pivot tables, and data visualization.

  • Familiarity with basic data analysis techniques and the ability to interpret trends.

  • Comfort with technology and willingness to learn AI tools and automation functions.

  • Experience in roles or coursework involving problem-solving, process improvement, or business analytics.

  • Ability to communicate effectively with stakeholders and present findings clearly.

  • Detail-oriented with strong organizational skills and ability to manage multiple priorities.

• Willing to share new ideas (with interns and full-time associates), while recognizing feedback as an opportunity for professional growth.
• Ideally, will be a sophomore or junior in college during the internship term, though all students will be considered.
• Understands how to manage time between school and work responsibilities.
• Must be able to work on-site in Lincoln, NE, and work at least 15-20 hours/week consistently.
• Is able to fulfill all hours within normal business operating hours (Mon-Fri, 8am-5pm CST).
