Nelnet’s Corporate Communications department is seeking a strategic and detail-oriented Corporate Marketing and Communications Specialist to join our fast-paced internal communications team. This role blends campaign planning, internal marketing strategy, account and project management, stakeholder engagement, and content development to support Nelnet’s various business areas as well as company-wide communication initiatives.

The ideal candidate is an experienced communications or marketing professional, with corporate communications or agency experience, who excels at connecting people to purpose, driving engagement through clear and inspiring communications plans and content, and ensuring message consistency across a variety of internal platforms and experiences. The position requires a strategic mindset, a passion for clear and engaging communication, and a strong mix of project management, event planning, and strategic marketing skills. Collaboration across teams and fostering positive relationships with key stakeholders is essential to ensuring internal campaigns and communications are effective, accessible, and aligned with business area and company goals.

The position is based in downtown Lincoln, NE, at Nelnet’s newly renovated headquarters, and requires in-office work with some remote flexibility. The role reports to the Director of Corporate Communications and includes supervision and mentorship of a part-time communications intern.

Campaign Strategy and Execution

  • Serve as project lead for various annual internal organization-wide campaigns and initiatives including the Associate Engagement Survey, United Way Campaign, Open Enrollment for Benefits, Benefits and Wellness Campaign, and other one-off projects in collaboration with planning committees and key stakeholders.
  • Develop and execute internal communications campaigns aligned with enterprise goals and initiatives.
  • Prepare strategic project briefs and communication plans, facilitate kickoff meetings, and oversee end-to-end delivery of communications and marketing projects.

Project Management and Resource Coordination

  • Manage multiple concurrent projects using project management software.
  • Collaborate with creative, traffic, and production teams to track timelines, assign resources, and maintain visibility on priorities, ensuring projects are delivered on time and with excellence.

Stakeholder Engagement and Account Management

  • Serve as a trusted communications partner to internal business areas.
  • Guide stakeholders through communication planning, content development, creative review, and results analysis.
  • Lead recurring check-ins and planning sessions to maintain alignment and facilitate proactive, ongoing updates about the status of projects.

Strategic Communications

  • Support the development and execution of department and organization-wide content strategy.
  • Partner with stakeholders across business areas to support internal initiatives and campaigns.
  • Assist with change management communications and special projects as needed.

Content Creation and Editing

  • Assist in writing, editing, reviewing, and optimizing internal communications content including emails, intranet posts, campaigns, leadership messages, and event materials.
  • Maintain brand consistency, ensure message clarity, and align all communications with strategic goals.

Event Planning and Support

  • Lead or assist in planning and executing small- and large-scale internal events such as annual leadership meetings, innovation sessions, and campaign rollouts—managing planning meetings, logistics, messaging, and production needs.

AI Integration for Efficiency

  • Utilize artificial intelligence (AI) tools (e.g., Microsoft Copilot) to enhance workflows, streamline content creation, summarize meeting notes, and improve communication strategy execution.

Quality Control and Brand Alignment

  • Review all creative assets for accuracy, grammar, brand consistency, and technical quality prior to final stakeholder review and final production/distribution.

Performance Reporting

  • Collaborate with the Corporate Communications team leads and internal stakeholders to evaluate the success of campaigns, providing insights and recommendations for continuous improvement.
  • Organize and lead feedback and retrospective sessions after events and project completion.

Vendor Partnerships and Strategy

  • Oversee day-to-day management of the internal online store including vendor coordination, team apparel and promotional material requests, holiday appreciation orders, and other store-related needs from departments across the organization.
  • Manage relationships with external vendors to support other internal marketing and communications needs including coordinating special print orders, sourcing promotional items, and ensuring quality, brand alignment, and timely delivery of materials.

Mentorship

  • Provide leadership, mentorship, and guidance to a part-time intern.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Communications, Journalism, Public Relations, Marketing, or a related field.
  • 3–5 years of experience in corporate, agency, or public-sector communications.
  • Proven experience managing complex projects and campaigns with multiple stakeholders.
  • Strong project management and organizational skills with the ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously and deliver high-quality work on time.
  • Experienced and confident in event planning and coordination, from ideation through execution.
  • Outstanding written and verbal communication skills, with strong storytelling instincts.
  • Familiarity with intranet platforms, especially SharePoint; knowledge of content management systems a plus.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft 365 (especially Teams, Outlook, SharePoint, and Copilot tools).
  • Comfortable exploring and adopting AI-powered tools to improve workflows and creative output.
  • Emotionally intelligent with audience awareness and ability to adapt messaging for impact.
  • Self-motivated with the ability to work independently and collaboratively in a fast-paced, deadline-driven environment.
