About the Role:

We’re looking for a Senior Azure SQL Database Administrator / Data Services Engineer to join our growing Data Services team. You’ll play a critical role in optimizing our Azure SQL environments, driving database performance, and supporting scalable data operations across the business.

If you’re passionate about high-performance OLTP systems, query tuning, and building resilient cloud-based data environments, this role offers the opportunity to make major impact in a fast-growing organization.

Why This Role Exists:

As our data landscape expands, the volume, complexity, and performance sensitivity of projects from Payments, EDW, Launch Loyalty, and Plans have increased significantly.

Our Data Services team acts as the central hub connecting these business units — managing data integrations, supporting platform connectivity (like Dynamics 365), and ensuring our systems remain reliable and performant. A major component of this role is supporting our production payments OLTP database, a high-volume, real-time transactional environment with strict concurrency control, low-latency requirements, and performance tuning decisions that directly impact live customer payment experiences. This work is fundamentally different from OLAP/reporting support and requires true OLTP specialization.

To support this environment and meet increasing demand, we are adding a senior-level DBA who can optimize OLTP performance, resolve complex blocking/locking patterns under load, and proactively manage our Azure SQL ecosystem.

What You’ll Do:

Database Administration & OLTP Optimization:

• Manage, monitor, and optimize Azure SQL Databases in a fully cloud-based Windows environment.

• Support and tune high-volume OLTP workloads, ensuring low latency, minimal blocking, and strong concurrency.

• Identify and resolve performance bottlenecks using DMVs, execution plans, waits, and telemetry.

• Tune, refactor, and improve stored procedures, queries, and schemas for real-time transactional systems.

• Implement proactive health checks, alerting, and automation to maintain stability and uptime.

• Partner with developers on query and architectural performance improvements.

Data Pipelines & Azure Platform Support

• Collaborate on data integrations and data movement workflows across platforms.

• Familiarity with Azure Data Factory (ADF), data pipelines, or similar tools to support and troubleshoot data movement—not deep ETL development expertise.

• Work cross-functionally with analytics and reporting teams to enable reliable data availability.

Confidently navigate the Azure Portal to administer SQL databases and related cloud services.

Security & Compliance

• Manage database access and roles using Microsoft Entra ID.

• Configure and maintain Azure Key Vault for secure credential/secret management.

• Ensure adherence to cloud security, compliance, and access governance best practices.

Collaboration & Mentorship

• Work closely with senior data leaders (Carlos Parra and Tarika) to support enterprise data initiatives.

• Mentor junior team members in SQL best practices, OLTP tuning, and cloud operations.

• Translate business needs into efficient, scalable technical solutions.

What We’re Looking For:

Required Qualifications:

• Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Information Systems, or related field.

5+ years of experience as a SQL DBA, including direct support of high-volume OLTP production systems.

• Deep hands-on experience with Azure SQL Database administration.

• Strong SQL development expertise: indexing strategies, stored procedures, performance tuning.

• Familiarity with data pipeline tools (ADF or similar).

• Strong experience with Microsoft Entra ID, Azure Key Vault, and Azure Portal.

• Solid understanding of waits, concurrency, blocking, resource governance, and telemetry insights.

Preferred Qualifications:

• Microsoft Certified: Azure Database Administrator Associate (DP-300) or similar.

• Experience with cloud telemetry dashboards and automated performance alerts.

• Familiarity with CI/CD and DevOps database deployment workflows.

• Exposure to data warehousing or reporting environments (Power BI, EDW).

• Excellent analytical, problem-solving, and communication skills.

Who You Are:

• A proactive problem-solver who thrives in real-time, mission-critical OLTP environments.

• Comfortable primarily as a DBA but able to support data pipeline workflows.

• Methodical, analytical, and organized in diagnosing performance issues.

• Collaborative, communicative, and able to work independently in a fast-paced environment.

• Passionate about building resilient, high-performing data systems that scale.
